Gloria Ximenes was born in Wimbledon and comes from an artistic background of Italian and Indian origin. Her great-uncle was Ettore Ximenes, an eminent sculptor in Rome, and her grandfather was a portrait painter who painted one of the great popes.

Gloria studied under Prof. Alberto Beltrame in Italy and then proceeded to train in Illustration and Graphic Design at St. Martin's School of Art, London. After spending some time painting in India she returned to England and taught painting at New Malden Adult Education Centre, Surrey.

After leaving St. Martin's Gloria studied the Impressionist method of painting under Ruth Leibman in Hampsted, London, for two years.

In the Seventies she experimented with ink glaze techniques using vibrant colours influenced by her oriental background.
